The holiday season is a time for connection, reflection, and generosity, and giving back doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. At AV Family Care, we believe that small acts of kindness can create big ripples, especially when families and nannies come together to support each other and their communities.

Here are some heartfelt, budget-friendly ways to give back this season and inspire the next generation to do the same.

Give Back to Each Other

The nanny-family relationship is built on trust, care, and mutual respect. This season, consider:

  • Handwritten Notes of Appreciation: A simple thank-you card from a parent or child can mean the world to a nanny. Nannies can also write notes to families expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be part of their lives.
  • Holiday Traditions Exchange: Share cultural traditions, recipes, or stories to celebrate the season together. It’s a beautiful way to build connections and learn from one another.
  • Gift of Time: Offer a few extra hours off or a flexible schedule to help your nanny enjoy the holidays with their own loved ones. Nannies can offer to help with holiday prep or babysit during a parents’ night out.

Support the Wider Community

Looking for places to donate or volunteer? Here are a few impactful options:

  • : Help fellow caregivers facing financial hardship. Even small donations make a difference.
  • Local Literacy Programs: Donate gently used children’s books or volunteer for story time at a community center.
  • Shelters and Food Banks: Collect non-perishable items, warm clothing, or hygiene kits. Many organizations welcome family-friendly volunteer shifts.

Get Kids Involved Early

Giving back is a powerful teachable moment. Here’s how to make it meaningful for children:

  • Create a Kindness Calendar: Each day in December, choose a small act of kindness, like donating a toy, baking cookies for a neighbor, or writing a thank-you note.
  • Toy or Book Drive: Let kids choose items to donate. Talk about why giving matters and who it helps.
  • Volunteer Together: Whether it’s packing meals or making holiday cards for seniors, kids learn empathy by doing.

The Heart of the Season

Giving back isn’t about grand gestures, it’s about showing up with heart. Whether you’re a nanny, a parent, or a child, your time, attention, and care are gifts that matter.

This holiday season, let’s celebrate the spirit of giving by lifting each other up one small act at a time.

From all of us at AV Family Care, thank you for being part of a community that cares.

Halloween is one of the most exciting times of year for kids—and let’s be honest, for grown-ups too! Costumes, pumpkins, and trick-or-treating make for plenty of fun, but the holiday doesn’t have to be all about sugary sweets.

As nannies, you have a unique opportunity to create Halloween traditions that are fun, creative, and meaningful. Here are some of AV Family Care’s outside-the-box Halloween ideas to enjoy with the children in your care this year:

Sweet Alternatives to Candy

Sure, candy is the star of Halloween, but too much sugar can lead to tummy aches (and sugar crashes!). Try mixing in some healthier or non-food treats:

  • Spooky fruit snacks: Freeze peeled grapes as “eyeballs” or make banana ghosts with chocolate chip faces.
  • DIY snack bags: Popcorn, pretzels, or trail mix in Halloween-themed bags.
  • Non-food goodies: Glow sticks, stickers, Halloween pencils, or temporary tattoos.

Kids love surprises, and these swaps can make Halloween just as fun without the sugar overload.

Creative Party Ideas

Whether it’s just you and the kids or a small group of friends, here are some ways to turn an ordinary afternoon into a Halloween celebration:

  • Pumpkin Decorating Station: Skip the carving knives and use paint, glitter, and stickers instead. It’s safe and still tons of fun!
  • Monster Dance Party: Put on a Halloween playlist and have a “freeze dance” contest. Bonus: it helps get the wiggles out.
  • DIY Costume Parade: Let kids dig through dress-up bins and create their own wacky “costumes on the fly.”

These activities are low-prep, high-fun, and easy to scale depending on how many kids are involved.

Giving Back This Halloween

Halloween is also a wonderful opportunity to teach children about kindness and community. Here are some ways to share the spirit of the holiday with others:

  • Reverse Trick-or-Treating: Help kids make small goodie bags with snacks or cards to deliver to neighbors, teachers, or community helpers.
  • Donate Costumes: Encourage families to donate gently used costumes to shelters or local charities.
  • Treats for Community Workers: Bring healthy snacks or treats to local fire stations, police stations, or hospitals.

Even small gestures can make a big difference—and kids will feel proud to spread Halloween cheer.

A Holiday Full of Fun (and Balance)

Halloween doesn’t have to be all about candy. With a little creativity, nannies can turn this holiday into a chance to celebrate, create, and give back. From healthier treats to creative parties to acts of kindness, these ideas make Halloween memorable for children in ways that go far beyond trick-or-treating.

This October, embrace the spooky fun—and don’t forget to snap some photos of those ghostly giggles and pumpkin grins!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to honor the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to fighting for equality and justice. It’s also an opportunity to educate children about the importance of these values and inspire them to contribute to a more inclusive society. Here’s how you can teach kids about equality and social justice in meaningful and age-appropriate ways.

Understanding MLK’s Legacy

Begin by introducing children to Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and achievements. Explain his role in the Civil Rights Movement and his efforts to end racial segregation and promote equality. Use age-appropriate books, videos, and discussions to convey his message of peace and justice.

Engaging Activities

Incorporate engaging activities to make learning about MLK’s legacy interactive and memorable. Consider organizing a craft project where children create posters with messages of equality and kindness, or host a family discussion where everyone shares what they have learned and how they can apply these principles in their daily lives.

Reading Together

There are numerous children’s books that beautifully convey the themes of equality and social justice. Books like “Martin’s Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport and “I Am Martin Luther King Jr.” by Brad Meltzer provide valuable lessons through inspiring stories. Reading together not only educates children but also opens the door for meaningful conversations about these important topics.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

Use MLK Day as an opportunity to promote diversity and inclusion within your community. Participate in local events or volunteer as a family at organizations that support marginalized communities. Encouraging children to engage with diverse groups and learn about different cultures fosters empathy and a broader understanding of the world.

Modeling Respect and Kindness

Children learn by example, so it’s essential to model respect and kindness in your daily interactions. Treat others with fairness, stand up against discrimination, and practice inclusivity in your own actions. By demonstrating these values, you instill a sense of responsibility in your children to contribute positively to society.

Looking Ahead

Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. By educating the next generation about his life and work, we can inspire them to continue his mission and create a more just and inclusive world.

The New Year is a time of reflection and renewal, offering a unique opportunity for families to set new goals and embrace fresh starts. As we turn the page to 2025, it’s important to focus on creating positive changes and meaningful traditions that strengthen family bonds and foster a sense of togetherness.

Setting Meaningful Goals

Begin by setting family goals that promote growth and happiness. These could range from health and wellness objectives, such as incorporating more outdoor activities, to educational aspirations like reading together every night. Involve everyone in the goal-setting process to ensure that each family member feels invested and motivated.

Creating New Traditions

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be limited to individual goals. Establishing new family traditions can create lasting memories and bring everyone closer. Consider starting a monthly family game night, planning annual trips to explore new places, or even volunteering together in your community. These traditions provide a sense of continuity and shared experience that strengthens family connections.

Nurturing Positive Habits

January is the perfect time to introduce positive habits that can improve daily life. Encourage open communication, establish healthy routines, and prioritize quality time together. Simple practices, such as having dinner together without distractions, can make a significant difference in fostering a supportive and loving home environment.

Supporting Each Other

Change can be challenging, especially for children. Be patient and offer support as your family adjusts to new routines and goals. Celebrate small victories and provide encouragement during setbacks. Remember, the journey towards new beginnings is a collective effort that requires understanding and cooperation.

Looking Ahead

As you embark on this new year, keep in mind that the most important aspect of setting goals and creating new traditions is to enjoy the journey together. Embrace the opportunities that 2025 brings, and cherish the moments of growth and connection with your loved ones.

Happy Holidays! We have put together some ideas on how you can make the holidays more meaningful for all.

Giving Back

One of the best ways to make the holidays more meaningful is to give back. Make baked goods or a meal for someone in need, or just to let someone know you’re thinking of them. Donate winter clothing and toiletries to a local shelter. Buy gift cards for first responders and essential workers to purchase meals at local restaurants. Adopt a local family hit hard this year, and purchase gifts and groceries.

Get Creative

Set up a family craft night and everyone make holiday decorations for the tree and around the house or make for others as gifts. How about a family gingerbread house making contest? Make holiday cards for deployed military and senior citizens who can’t be with their families this year. Make someone’s holiday special letting them know you are thinking of them.

Holiday Traditions

Create new holiday traditions this year! Maybe a family scavenger hunt? Or how about a family sing-along via Zoom? Have each family member write down what they are thankful for this year and place on the tree. On Christmas morning, everyone reads their contribution.

Family connection

Set up Zoom calls or Facebook video chat. Set up games you can play from afar. Have your children interview their grandparents and get to know more about when they were children and share memories of holidays they remember. Record and write these down to share in years to come. Place photos of family members who cannot be with you on the tree, around the table, or make a festive display.

Celebrate a Different Culture

Consider celebrating another culture this holiday season. Research how other cultures celebrate the holidays – traditions, foods, songs, language, and clothing. Embrace one, or more different cultures into your holiday celebrations this year.

Furry & Feathered Friends

Decorate the outdoors with handmade bird feeders made of seeds, pinecones, and peanut butter. How about a garland of popcorn and apple and orange slices? Set out apples and carrots for other wildlife to enjoy a holiday feast

Record Your Memories

Take all the photos and video you have taken this year and create a holiday greeting for friends and loved ones. Let each family member make a special message for loved ones and share. Email to friends and family to enjoy and encourage them to do the same.

Happy Holidays from all of us here at AV Family Care.

Everyone says that it’s better to give than to receive. But, it can be easy to lose sight of this during the holiday season, especially for kids. So much of the Christmas season is focused on toys and presents, kids tend to catch a case of the “gimmies.” Are you having a hard time teaching your kids about how important it is to give? If so, here are a few ways you can encourage them to be more giving, during the holidays and beyond.

Start with a Small Act

Many people have a hard time getting motivated to give because they feel like theircontribution won’t matter in the long run. Prove to your kids that every little bit counts when it comes to donating either time or resources. Look for someone in your community that your kids can help with something like yard work or other chores around the house.

Don’t forget to reward them for their good deeds and show them the ways that even a small act of kindness can be a big help to someone. That way, they’ll probably more willing (and excited) to help the next time.

Set a Good Example

Kids often want to follow in the footsteps of their parents. If you want your kids to pick up on how important it is to give, make sure that you practice a bit of giving yourself. Let them see you putting aside time to help others or donating to a charitable organization. Remember, it’s sometimes more difficult to get your kids to want to give when they’ve never seen you do so. All it takes is once, to set a good example.

Find Other Kids

It will be easier for your kids to connect with the idea of giving if they’re involved in a project with their peers. Look for opportunities like food banks or toy drives in your community. Check to see if they allow children to participate in their programs. If there aren’t any kid-friendly charitable organizations in your area, consider taking it upon yourself to organize a volunteer event. You also have the option of seeking out online charities or volunteer organizations that kids can relate to.

Make Them Feel Empowered

The greatest motivator for giving is the feeling that you can make a difference. If you want your children to feel good about giving, make them feel good about themselves. Let them know that the things they have to say are important and encourage them to incorporate their talents into giving back to others. If they feel empowered, they’ll feel like they definitely can and will make a difference.

If you practice the act of giving on a regular basis, you make a habit out of generosity and charity. This is especially true of kids, who are growing up and developing into the people they will be later in life. Talk to your children about how important it is to give today and they will almost certainly make you proud of their compassion in the future.

The holidays are upon us. That means you probably have guests arriving at your home or workplace. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins … they’re coming. Added guests can bring on changes in routine, schedule and stress levels for all. Here are a few things you can do to assure that everyone has a wonderful and stress-free holiday.

Expectations

Sit down with the parents and clearly outline what the expectations of you will be while the guests are here. Will you still need to work every day? Will your hours change to accommodate any family events or will the grandparents, aunt, uncle, best friend want to take the child? Will you be required to watch any additional children and how will you be compensated for the extra child – by the employers or by the guests?

By setting the expectations and boundaries early on, you set the tone for the visit, and the parents can relay the information to the guests. Knowing early on that the grandparents are allowed to drive the children to events or not, or to remind Aunt Julie not to give the kids gum will help all feel welcome and comfortable in the home.

Make them feel welcome

Find out of any of the guests have special dietary restrictions or favorite foods they like to have and make sure you put together a small welcome basket of their favorites they can go to in the pantry or put together a special welcome package of small toys, books, coloring books/crayons for the visiting child, age appropriate of course. Put a package together of area attractions, maps, local directions, and restaurants that may interest your guests.

House Rules

Work with the parents to develop some house rules, print them out and place them on the refrigerator, and as an added touch, buy an inexpensive frame, frame them and place them in the guest room/s. Rules can be no shoes worn in the house. Please don’t feed the dog/cat people food. Please no glassware on tables without a coaster. Pick those rules that are important to the household, and that you would want to know if you were a guest. If guests are staying for an extended stay, consider typing out instructions to the washer and dryer, dishwasher, TV / Streaming Services, Wi-Fi information and any other helpful tools they will need to make their visit comfortable.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Prepare yourself for the little things. Know that all the recyclables may not make it into the proper containers, and that dirty dishes may be left in the sink. Bedtimes may be disrupted by the excitement of having guests so you may have tired kids the next day. Realize that these are temporary issues and to not take them personally. Let everyone have their fun, and leave a little extra room in your day to find all the missing sippy cups and sort all the toys back to their proper basket.

Like any other relationship, good communication is vital to having an effective nanny/parent-family relationship. To avoid any miscommunication, AV Family Care suggests creating a work agreement, or contract, for both the nanny and family to agree to.

But what does a work agreement include?

Agreed upon salary: After you and your nanny have agreed on a salary, it should be clearly stated in the work agreement. This salary should include a description of paid holidays, how many allotted sick days your nanny has, and how many vacation days also. It should also include how sick days and vacation days will be handled. How much notice is needed for vacation days? Will vacation days be paid or unpaid? Will sick days be paid or unpaid? Whatever you decide should be defined in the agreement to avoid any conflict.

Job description: To ensurequality work, your nanny needs to know what is expected of her. In your agreement, you should write out a detailed description of what her daily duties include. Written clear expectations give you something to refer back to ifresponsibilitiesaren’t completed.

Employment reviews and raises: Let your nanny know how her work will be evaluated and how often. Will it be a discussion every two weeks, will it be a written review every month, or will it be a bi-annual evaluation? Once you figure out the mechanics, add them to your work agreement. Your work agreement should also include whether this is potential for raises and bonuses.

Termination: Although hiring an in-home caregiver feels much more intimate than most jobs, it is important to remember they are still a household employee. In the work agreement, you should outline clear steps to what happens when you or the caregiver is ready to terminate the position. How many weeks notice do you need from the caregiver if they decide to leave? If you choose to fire the nanny, will it be on the spot or will you give her notice? If so, how much notice? Once you figure out what is comfortable for you to do in this situation, define it in the work agreement.

As you can see, a work agreement will set the tone for the job and assure that everyone is on the same page.

Almost all busy, working parents need a nanny to take care of their child and, sometimes, their household chores. Finding a nanny is not an easy thing to do. AV is here to help navigate hiring a nanny. Before you start your search, here are some tips to get you ready:

When finding a nanny, you need to identify the number of hours that you will require the nanny to work. If you are that busy and if your schedule frequently changes, you should make sure that you will inform your nanny beforehand if you need her to stay with your child overtime so that she can make the necessary adjustments in her personal life. The nanny may feel taken advantage of if you are constantly requiring her to work more than the hours you agreed upon when you hired her.

It is important that you decide on the pay right from the start. Consider the amount that you can afford before finding a nanny. Be sure to take into consideration taxes, overtime, and overall costs associated with having a third person in your household. Ask people you know who have nannies how much pay they provide so you have a realistic basis. Live-in nannies get pay plus room and board. Some families allow nannies the use of a car and other perks such as gym membership, paid vacations and educational stipend.

When finding a nanny, you also need to consider the fact that you will become an employer so you need to take care of completing all of the necessary legal employment documents required by the government and pay all necessary taxes, Medicare and social security. Both you and your nanny will have to pay certain taxes. AV can recommend a tax service to help you in your nanny employment.

In finding a nanny, it is important that you and the nanny are in the same page when it comes to disciplining your child so make sure to discuss with your prospects what is acceptable and what is not and be sure that all of your terms are understood. Also discuss goals for your child, educational aspects, and whether your nanny can take the child/children places outside the home – library, play groups, parks, zoo, etc.

Nannies require time off like any regular employee. At the same time, make sure to pay your nanny for overtime work or of you asked her to work during her supposed time off. If there is a need for the nanny to travel along with you and your family, you should cover all of her expenses plus her regular pay.

All the items we’ve discussed should be laid out in a work agreement signed by both the parents and the nanny.

When you make an offer that shows a prospective nanny that you respect their profession and value their services enough to give them honest pay and good working schedule, then finding a nanny should come easy.

AV can help when it comes time to hire your nanny. We meet each caregiver prior to placing them, and work with you and the nanny to find the best fit. Give us a call and find out how we can help you find the best caregiver for your family.

As a nanny, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the children you care for. You can act as an inspiration, example and a mentor for the kids, so they can learn important virtues. There are six main pillars of character– trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. You can engage in different activities with the kids that will teach and test them in these areas.

Provide anecdotes for each virtue-related activity, so the story can serve as an example and help to further understand why these are important values. Here are some of the ways you can instill the six pillars of character:

Trustworthiness

Trust is a vital foundation for every relationship. Explain that the child will receive more freedom and will be considered more mature in relation with their level of trustworthiness.

For older kids who receive homework, provide them with an initial independent studying time. Explain that this time can be used for organization of assignments and be clear that you expect a certain volume of homework finished by the time you check in with them. Leave the room and return at the agreed time and check whether or not they’ve completed their work. If they’ve engaged in other activities and distracted themselves, explain they must now be monitored for assurance that the homework is properly completed.

If you work with smaller children, play a board game with them and then leave the room. If the pieces on the board have moved, point this out to the children and ask why or how it happened. Read ato further illustrate your point.

Respect

Respect is seen in many forms — respect of the environment, respect of others and respect of yourself. Teach kids how they can respect the environment andat home. Explain how landfills overflow with trash and how their contents can be reduced through recycling and composting.

Teach the kids about respect for others and take them into a restaurant. Have them order for themselves and remember to say please and thank you to the server.

Explain the importance of self respect and create a list where they add a characteristic they like about themselves every day. They will gain a greater appreciation for their own self and through that positive reinforcement, they’ll have a solid foundation for self respect.

Responsibility

Responsibility teaches kids how they can muster willpower and why it is important to do tasks properly. Chores are an excellent introduction for the foundation of responsible behavior. Create a weekly chore list and post it in a visible area. Establish the expectation that the child must remember their chores and complete them.

Fairness

Explain that everyone must be treated equally — no one is more important than anyone else. Play a game together in which the kids can earn a prize, like 12 pieces of candy. Have one of the children divide the prize amongst all the players and make sure everyone receives the same amount. You can also put a child in charge of dishing up dessert and make sure he doles out the same amount for each person.

Caring

Caring and kindness reduces the negativity that is spread throughout school, the workplace or your personal life. Talk with the children about helping others and set up a time, every week, where you can volunteer within the community together. You can also utilize the, where you and the child can take daily strolls and rack up points. The points turn into money that you can give to a charity that you choose together.

Citizenship

Children should understand at an early age that they are a citizen of their community, country and the world. Visit a variety of museums to help children see how people from all time periods and all parts of the world have contributed to civilization. Both art museums and natural history museums will provide children with enhanced worldly knowledge and instill the idea of citizenship.
